Softball Announces 2005 Schedule
Gay McNutt |
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss Head Softball Coach, Gay McNutt, the 2004 Conference USA Coach of the Year, announced the 2005 Lady Eagle Softball schedule today.
The defending Conference USA regular-season champions will compete in four spring tournaments and will play 37 games, 19 of which will be at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The Lady Eagles will host a fall tournament and compete in another at Spring Klein, Texas.
"It?s going to be a tough schedule," McNutt said. "Our non-conference competition probably isn?t as tough as it has been in previous years, but with eight freshmen coming in, we didn?t want to load them down too much. Hopefully we can put some wins together, and we can be better prepared entering conference play."
The Lady Eagles will face Mississippi State, Houston, USF, DePaul, and Louisville, who participated in NCAA Regional action last season. That number could increase when the tournament fields are set.
Non-conference home games this season include doubleheaders against Jackson State, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, and Northwestern (La.) State, along with single games against Southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi State. The Lady Eagles will also play non-conference road games against Ole Miss, Mississippi State, McNeese State, and Southeastern La.
Southern Miss will host Conference USA contests against Charlotte, USF, and Houston and will travel to Saint Louis, Louisville, UAB, and DePaul, the 2004 Conference USA Tournament Champions.
The Lady Eagles return six starters and two pitchers from last year?s team that finished 33-26 in 2004, and advanced to NCAA postseason play.
