Softball's Jenkins Honored As CoSIDA Academic All-American
Auriel Jenkins |
HATTIESBURG, Miss.
- The honors keep coming for Southern Miss softball's Auriel Jenkins, who was named a 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-American, Thursday, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).Jenkins was a member of the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America Softball University Division Third Team when the teams were announced Thursday. She becomes the first Lady Eagle softball player named to the Academic All-America Team since the program was reinstated in 1999. In all, Southern Miss has had 13 players selected to a CoSIDA Academic All-America Team in seven sports.
"I think this award sums up what kind of person Auriel is," Southern Miss Head Coach Gay McNutt said. "She is a complete person, a great leader and a great student-athlete. She has received so many awards throughout the year, and this is the icing on the cake."
Jenkins has enjoyed a tremendous senior season. As the Conference USA Most Valuable Player, she helped lead the Lady Eagles to the 2004 regular season Conference USA championship and a berth in the NCAA Regional Tournament. She led the team in a number of offensive categories including batting average (.373), slugging percentage (.601), on-base percentage (.432), runs scored (41), hits (tied with 57), and total bases (92). Jenkins also was second on the team in RBIs (29) and home runs (9).
Jenkins also was selected to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-South Region Second Team and was one of four Southern Miss athletes honored as an All American by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Along with her athletic successes, Jenkins has received a number of academic accolades. She currently holds a 3.45 GPA in Coaching and Sport Administration and has been selected to the dean's list twice, president's list, Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
