Softball's Jenkins, Butler Named Academic All-District HATTIESBURG, Miss.
Senior outfielder Auriel Jenkins (Pearl, Miss.) was one of 11 members on the all-district first team, while sophomore second baseman Charity Butler (Pensacola, Fla.) was part of the 11-player second team. The two players joined 20 others hailing from 13 other schools throughout the region.
As a first-team selection, Jenkins now moves on to the Academic All-America University Division national ballot. The Academic All-America Women's Softball Team will be announced on Thursday, June 3.
Jenkins, who was selected to the All-Conference USA First Team and named the league's Most Valuable Player on Wednesday, is currently ranked in the top ten of six of the league's major hitting categories. The centerfielder leads the Lady Eagles in batting average (.399), slugging percentage (.630) and on-base percentage (.461). Jenkins also is tops on her team in runs scored (39), is tied with Sarah Boyd for most home runs (8), and collected 87 total bases on the year. The senior is ranked 46th nationally for her batting average and earlier in the year received C-USA Hitter of the Week honors on March 29.
Along with her athletic successes, Jenkins has received a number of academic accolades. She currently holds a 3.45 GPA in Coaching and Sport Administration and has been selected to the dean's list twice, president's list, Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Jenkins also was one of four Southern Miss athletes honored as an All American by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Butler currently ranks third on the team with a .321 batting average and has 44 hits, eight doubles and 20 RBIs. She holds a perfect 4.00 GPA in business administration and has been a member of the President's list and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll three times each. Butler also was selected to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and was a 2003 C-USA Academic Medalist.
