The Tulane men?s tennis team claimed its first shutout victory of the season Friday with a 7-0 win over Conference USA rival Southern Miss at the Goldring Tennis Center. Southern Miss dropped to 2-5 while Tulane improved to 7-3 on the year.Tulane, ranked 40th in the country, won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. The Green Wave?s No. 1 duo of Michael Kogan and David Goulet downed Juan Garzon and Reid Bourgeois, 8-1 to open the day and the No. 3 squad of Jacobo Hernandez and Alberto Sottocorno clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Christopher Rea and Thomas Funke.
Green Wave players won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, but it took three sets Tulane?s top singles player, 11th-ranked Michael Kogan, to defeat David Canudas, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
Southern Miss takes on St. John's Saturday in a 1 p.m., match at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
