Southern Miss Football Opens Spring Workouts HATTIESBURG, Miss. --
Conference USA Coach of the Year and Southern Miss Head Coach Jeff Bower was pleased with what he saw from the opening workout and is excited about the upcoming spring schedule.
"I liked what I saw today," Bower said. "The players knew what we wanted them to do. We did have some mistakes, but you are always going to have that on the first day of spring practice. I think we retained a lot from last year, and that was good."
Thursday's practice was the first of 15 for the Golden Eagles will practice this spring. The team will continue with sessions on Friday and Saturday, with Saturday's practice being the first in full pads.
Bower said that Thursday's practice was a refresher course for the team, which had not practiced of played since the 2003 Liberty Bowl in December.
"We are just installing our offense and defense," Bower said. "Since you can't go in pads the first two days, you try to put in as much of your schemes as you can. We will spend this evening watching the tape of the younger kids. I think we have a lot of good competition with some of the changes we made, along with the four midyear guys that we have with us."
Southern Miss will continue its spring practices over the next few weeks, culminating with the annual Black and Gold Spring Scrimmage on Saturday, April 17.
