Eagle Netters Beat Samford, 4-3 Hattiesburg, Miss.
The victory, after a pair of losses to open the spring, pushed Head Coach Teddy Viator's team record to 1-2. Southern Miss is scheduled to play next, at Ole Miss, Feb. 25.
In today's match, Samford's James Bryce and Johnny Griffee defeated Thomas Funke and Reid Bourgeois, 8-6, and Manuel Miletic and Bob Nunnery beat Dylan Mezey and Marc Lux 8-2 to give Samford the doubles point. David Canudas and Chris Rea beat J. Jensen and Stuart Misner, 8-3 in the other doubles match.
The Golden Eagles then proceeded to win matches in the numbers one, two, four and six positions to earn the four points necessary to win their first match of the spring. Canudas defeated Miletic 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles, Juan Garzon stopped Bryce 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2, Rea needed three sets to beat Nunnery 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 at No. 4, and Mezey also needed three sets to beat Brad Weaver, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot. Samford won singles matches at No. 3, Misner over Lux 2-6, 7-6, 4-6), and No. 5, Griffee over Bourgeois 6-2, 6-4.
