Southern Miss Ends Road Swing With A Loss

MILWAUKEE, Wis. ? The Southern Miss Lady Eagle volleyball team ended their road season on a down note, losing to Marquette in three games, 3-0 (30-18, 30-26, 30-16). The loss dropped the Lady Eagles to 5-20 and 0-11, while Marquette improved to 18-6 and 8-3.
Morgan Johnson led Southern Miss with seven kills and Amy Truong recorded nine digs. Truong now needs only 10 digs to reach 1,000 digs in her career. She has 990.
Theresa Coughlin led Marquette with 14 kills, while Sarah Vernon had 46 assists in the Marquette win and Erin Freer had 17 digs.
After spotting Southern Miss a 5-1 lead in game one, Marquette won 29 of the next 44 points to win going away, 30-18. Marquette hit .275 percent for the game and never trailed in the game after taking a 9-8 lead.
The second game was much closer than the first, with Marquette taking a four-point win. The Marquette benefited from five service aces, three by Vernon, to take the 2-0 lead. Southern Miss kept the game close with five blocks, three by Nicole Rock, but couldn?t get any closer to Marquette than 25-23.
Marquette dominated in the third game, winning 30-16. Southern Miss couldn?t stop Marquette?s potent offensive attack as it had 21 kills in the game and a .259 attack percentage.
Marquette?s Jamie Mueller had 13 kills for Marquette, recording a double-double with 14 digs, and Heisser and Kimberley Todd also had 10 kills.
Southern Miss returns home for its final home matches against USF (Nov. 12) and UAB (Nov. 13). Truong and Kate Juedes will be honored in their last home match on Saturday. First serve is set for 7 p.m., in the Payne Center.
