Football Hosts UAB On Saturday
The Golden Eagles began the season 5-1, but have come up short in their last three games, falling to Cincinnati, Memphis and TCU, and sit 5-4 overall and 4-3 in Conference USA.
The team has two remaining contests, Saturday against UAB and Dec. 4 against
Southern Miss and UAB will meet for the fifth time on Saturday. The Golden Eagles have a 4-0 series edge over the Blazers, including a 17-12 victory last year in
Through nine games, Southern Miss has scored 236 points and average 26.2 a contest. The team has accumulated 2,898 yards of total offense, including 1,463 through the air and 1,435 on the ground. The offense averages 322 yards of total offense a game (159.4 rushing, 162.6 passing), 4.6 yards a play. In addition, the squad has converted on 49-of-135 (36 percent) of third downs and 8-of-17 (47 percent) on fourth down attempts, also holding the ball an average of 29:37 a game.
Junior starting quarterback Dustin Almond leads the team with 1,168 yards passing, and has completed 95-of-188 passes this year, while averaging 166.9 yards through the air. The Orange Beach, Fla., native has thrown eight touchdowns against five interceptions, and has completed 50.5 percent of his passes this season. Almond has the team?s two longest touchdown passes of the season, a 46-yard score to Marvin Young against
Redshirt freshman Jeremy Young is second on the team with 180 passing yards, the bulk of which came at TCU. In his first extended action at the position in his career, Young finished with 138 yards passing. He has completed 14-of-35 passes this season and has a long pass of 26 yards. Young also has 47 rushing yards and a touchdown on the campaign.
Sophomore Damion Carter started two games at quarterback following Almond?s injury, and has completed 14-of-34 passes for 115 yards on the season. Carter has three passing touchdowns against one interception.
Junior running back Anthony Harris is the team?s leading rusher, with 548 yards on the season. He has 140 carries this season, and has scored a team-high five touchdowns. Harris averages 3.9 yards a carry, and has gained over 50 yards on the ground in seven of the team?s nine games in 2004.
Senior Sherron Moore ranks second on the team with 355 rushing yards, on 85 carries.
Redshirt freshman Larry Thomas recorded a long run of 79 yards against
Junior wide receiver Antwon Courington leads the receivers with 442 yards, on 32 catches. Courington averages 13.8 yards a catch and has four touchdowns this season. Against TCU, he recorded his first 100-yard receiving game, finishing with seven catches for 112 yards. It was the first 100-yard receiving game, since DaRon Lawrence had 104 against
Marvin Young ranks second on the team with 263 receiving yards, on 19 catches. He averages 13.8 yards a reception and scored touchdowns in the team?s first three games this season. Young, who has battled a case of turf toe in recent weeks, caught two passes for 12 yards against TCU, his first pass receptions since the
Senior DaRon Lawrence ranks third on the team with 239 receiving yards on 17 catches, averaging a team-high 14.1 yards per catch.
Sophomore Anthony Perine had a career day against TCU, finishing the game with 63 receiving yards on four catches. Perine ranks as the team?s fourth leading receiver, with 12 catches for 137 yards.
Freshman Tavarres Williams fifth on the team with 115 receiving yards on seven catches, including a season-best 71-yard performance against
Junior John Eubanks leads the team in both punt and kickoff returns. Eubanks has 12 punt returns for 73 yards, including a long return of 51 yards. He also has 18 kickoff returns for 540 yards, including an M.M. Roberts Stadium record return of 97 yards against Houston (10/7) this year.
Sophomore kicker Darren McCaleb has connected on all 12 field goals he has attempted this year, including a long of 41 two times, at
Defensively, the Golden Eagles have recorded 67 tackles for loss, 23 sacks, 12 interceptions, 32 pass breakups, 12 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, one blocked punt and a safety.
Senior linebacker Michael Boley leads the team with 104 tackles, including 59 solos and 45 assists. He has 12 tackles for a loss, five sacks, one interception, two pass breakups and three forced fumbles on the year.
Senior linebacker Antoine Cash ranks second on the team with 80 tackles, a team-high 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned 62 yards against East Carolina.
Eubanks leads the team with three interceptions, while Trevis Coley and Naton Stewart each have two.
UAB is 7-3 on the year, 5-2 in Conference
The Blazers have scored 311 points this season, and average 31.1 points a game. Through 10 games, UAB has amassed 3,915 yards of total offense, including 1,465 on the ground and 2,450 through the air. The team averages 391.5 yards of total offense a game (146.5 on the ground, 245 through the air). In addition, the team converts on 44-of-124 (35 percent) on third down and 3-of-8 (38 percent) on fourth down attempts this year.
Quarterback Darrell Hackney leads the team with 2,447 passing yards, and has completed 155-of-274 passes (56.6 percent) this season. He averages 244.7 yards a game, and has thrown 22 touchdowns against six interceptions.
Running back Dan Burks has a team-high 769 yards, on 140 carries. He has a long run of 69 yards and has scored three touchdowns on the campaign. Corey White has a team-best seven scores on the ground, ranking second on the team with 476 yards on 85 carries.
Roddy White leads the team with 1,207 yards receiving yards on 61 catches. He averages 19.8 yards a catch and 120.7 yards a game, and has scored 12 touchdowns this season. Bradley Chavez is second on the team with 371 receiving yards on 17 catches, including two touchdowns. Reggie Lindsey has four receiving touchdowns for the Blazers, with 15 catches for 198 yards.
Lindsey leads the team in both punt and kickoff returns. He has 17 punt returns for 218 yards, with a touchdown. In addition, he has 17 kickoff returns for 445 yards.
Kicker Nick Hayes has connected on 11-of-15 field goals this season, including a long of 38 yards. Parker Mullins has 48 punts for 1,953 yards, for a 40.7 per punt average.
Defensively, the Blazers have 69 tackles for loss, 26 sacks, nine interceptions, 33 pass breakups, five quarterback hurries, seven forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and two blocked kicks.
Zac Woodfin leads the Blazer defense with 86 total tackles, including 47 solos and 39 assists. He also has eight tackles for loss, four sacks, two pass breakups, two quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Larry McSwain has team-highs with 17 tackles for loss and 13 sacks. Will Evans has a team-best two interceptions on the year.
