Football Travels To TCU On Saturday
HATTIESBURG, Miss.? The Southern Miss football team, coming off back-to-back Conference USA losses for the first time since the 2002 season, returns to action Saturday at TCU, in a 2:05 p.m., contest from Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.
The game is not being televised but can be heard on the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network beginning at 1 p.m. with the pregame show.
The Golden Eagles, 5-3, 4-2 in Conference
Southern Miss has scored 219 points this season and averages 27.4 yards a contest. The team has amassed 2,578 yards of total offense this season, including 1,369 on the ground and 1,209 through the air. In addition, the offense averages 171.1 rushing yards per game and 151.1 passing yards a contest, combining for a 322.2 total offense per game average and a 4.7 yard per play average.
The Golden Eagles have converted on 46-of-118 third down conversions and 6-of-11 on fourth down attempts this season. The team holds the ball for 29:59 a contest.
Junior starting quarterback Dustin Almond leads the team with 1,052 yards through the air, completing 86-of-168 passes for a 51.2 percent completion rate. The
Sophomore Damion Carter filled in for Almond during his injury forced absence, and guided the team to a 1-1 mark in the his two-game stint as the starter. He has completed 14-of-34 passes for 115 yards on the year, including three touchdowns, one of which proved to be the game-winner in overtime against
Junior running back Anthony Harris made his 14th-consecutive start at running back against
Junior Antwon Courington had the biggest day of any Golden Eagle receiver, finishing with 74 receiving yards on six catches against
Senior DaRon Lawrence has 17 catches for 239 yards on the campaign, despite a torn ACL sustained before the team?s season-opening game. Freshman Tavarres Williams ranks fourth in receiving yards with 115, though he has only played in four games, and recording a catch in only three. Williams caught seven passes for 71 yards against
Junior Luke Johnson has punted 45 times for 1,805 yards on the year, including a long punt of 56 yards. Sophomore kicker Darren McCaleb has made all 11 field goals he has attempted this season, including a long of 41 yards, made against
Junior John Eubanks leads Southern Miss with nine punt returns for 61 yards, including a long of 51 yards. Eubanks also has 17 kickoff returns for 512 yards, including a M.M. Roberts Stadium record return of 97 yards against
Defensively, the Golden Eagles have registered 61 tackles for loss, 21 sacks, 11 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and 31 pass breakups.
Senior linebacker Michael Boley has a team-high 95 tackles (52 solos and 43 assists) this season. He also has 10 tackles for loss, four sacks, one interception, two pass breakups and three forced fumbles.
Senior linebacker Antoine Cash has a team high 13 tackles for loss and ranks second on the team with 70 total tackles (35 solos and 35 assists). Cash also has four sacks, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and has two fumble recoveries, including a return of 62 yards against
Eubanks leads the team with three interceptions.
TCU is currently 4-5 and 2-4 in Conference
The Horned Frogs have converted on 47-of-137 (34 percent) third downs this season and 8-of-13 (62 percent) on fourth down attempts, and average 30:06 in time of possession.
Brandon Hassell has a team-high 1,257 passing yards on the season on 91-of-161 passing. He has eight touchdown passes against two interceptions on the campaign. Tye Gunn ranks second with 1,002 passing yards on 64-of-116 passing, with nine touchdowns against two interceptions.
Lonta Hobbs leads the team with 10 rushing touchdowns, with 647 rushing yards on 125 attempts. Robert Merrill has scored three times this season and ranks second on the team with 461 rushing yards.
Cory Rodgers has 589 receiving yards on 44 catches, an average of 13.4 yards per catch, and has five touchdowns. Reggie Harrell is second on the team with four touchdown receptions and 552 yards receiving.
John Braziel has punted 54 times for 2,161 yards, including a long punt of 56 yards. Peter LoCoco has made 8-of-14 field goals this season, including a season long of 47 yards.
Defensively, the Horned Frogs have 58 tackles for loss, 24 sacks, six interceptions, eight forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, 32 pass breakups and six quarterback hurries.
Linebacker Martin Patterson has a team-high 105 tackles, including 60 solos and 45 assists, with six tackles for loss, two sacks, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two quarterback hurries. Defensive back Marvin Godbolt leads the team with 7.5 tackles for loss and four sacks.
Defensive backs Elvis Gallegos and Mark Walker are tied for the team lead with two interceptions.
