Lady Eagle Volleyball Team Lands Illinois Standout

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss Head Volleyball Coach Ricci Luyties has announced the signing of Illinois standout Ashley Petrinec of Bloomington, Ill., to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2005-06 academic year.  Petrinec is Luyties? first signee.

Petrinec, a 6-foot outside hitter, is a two-time Pantagraph All-Area First Team selection and a two-time first team All-Big 12 Conference pick.  She holds school career records for kills (1,090), kill attempts (2,571), aces (253) and hitting percentage (.309) at Bloomington High School, where she played for Coach Joe Sanders.  Her 732 career digs ranks second.  She holds the state record for consecutive aces with 11.  Her 253 aces rank ninth in state history.

?We are excited about Ashley becoming a part of the Lady Eagle volleyball program,? Luyties said.  ?She?ll definitely be an impact player right away.  She has a good all-around game and is a heavy hitter.  She brings solid credentials to this program.?

Petrinec played club volleyball for the Illinois Juniors Volleyball Club last year.

?I think she?ll be able to walk in and offer something right away,? Coach Sanders said.  ?She?ll be part of getting the program headed in the right direction.?
