Southern Miss Loses Volleyball To Memphis, 3-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team could not over come Memphis? high-powered offensive attack, losing 3-1, in Conference USA action Friday night. The loss dropped Southern Miss to 4-10 and 0-3 in the league.
The Memphis volleyball squad improved to 17-4 overall and 2-0 in C-USA. The Tigers, who have now won 10 straight, got a match-high 22 kills and 12 digs from Tiara Gilkey, while Nancy Nellans also posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Southern Miss? Amy Truong recorded her second triple-double of the season, registering 11 kills, 29 assists and 13 digs. Jazzmien Stephens led the Lady Eagles with 17 kills and six total blocks.
Memphis clinched the match with a dominating fourth-game performance. With the game tied at 4-4, Memphis reeled off five-straight points for a 9-4 lead, and never looked back in taking the win, 30-16.
A 9-0 run powered the Golden Eagles to an insurmountable 16-6 lead midway through the game. Memphis clawed back into the game with a 6-1 spurt that cut the lead to 20-24, but that would be as close as the Tigers would get as USM scored six of the final nine points to claim a 30-23 win.
Memphis regrouped in the second set as the defense held the Golden Eagles to a .060 hitting percentage in the game, while the offense got six kills from Tiara Gilkey. Memphis scored the first three points and never looked back, before ending the contest with its largest lead, 30-20.
The Tigers continued to roll in the third frame behind Fehi Tuivai, Shelby Burton and Nancy Nellans, who each had three kills in the game. Southern Miss out hit Memphis .323 to .265 in the set, but the Tiger offense responded with seven service aces to take control of the game before claiming a 30-25 win.
Southern Miss returns to action, Saturday, against Saint Louis in the Payne Center. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
