Football Continues Practice During Off-Week
The football team practiced in full pads for two and a half hours Wednesday, at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
Head Football Coach Jeff Bower said the team spent Wednesday?s practice working on situational plays, in addition to the offense, defense and special teams units working on their respective schemes.
?We did a lot of work in short yardage and in our goal line packages today,? Bower said. ?I thought we had a good practice yesterday, but we were just ok today. We want to get some live work in this week, to keep your timing and to also work on certain things that we thought needed to be worked on.?
Bower said starting quarterback Dustin Almond has ?been working a lot? and is ?pretty close? to being full speed. Bower added that the coaching staff continues to err on the side of caution with Almond, not ?letting him cut fully loose yet.? Bower said he ?will be ready to go next week.?
In addition, Bower said senior wide receiver DaRon Lawrence (knee) ?did some work today,? while freshman wide receiver Chris Johnson and senior wide receiver Marvin Young ?didn?t do anything in practice today.? Bower said he expected both of to be back at full speed on Monday.
Southern Miss, ranked No. 25 in both the AP and ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches Poll, has the weekend off. The Golden Eagles will return to action Nov. 6, hosting
