Southern Miss Loses at Charlotte in a 3-0 Decision

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team could not over come Charlotte?s offensive attack, losing 3-0, in Conference USA action Friday night. The loss dropped Southern Miss to 5-14 and 0-6 in the league. The Charlotte volleyball squad improved to 17-8 overall and 3-4 in C-USA.

Southern Miss? Cassie Conley was the only Lady Eagle to notch double-digit kills with 14. Amanda Blunck recorded 11 digs.

The 49ers had two players with double-digit kills, Jessica Oldenburg and Lisa Newell recorded 16 kills a piece. Abby Szlanfucht posted 22 digs.

Southern Miss came out of the extended break with a surprising 11-4 start to game three. Charlotte then reeled off five unanswered points, including two aces from Oldenburg, to force a Golden Eagle time out at 11-9. The Niners took their first lead since 1-0, when Szlanfucht put down an ace to make the score 19-18, and the 49ers didn't let up in outscoring Southern Miss 11-7 the rest of the way to close out the match.

In game two, the score was tight (17-16) before Charlotte went on a 5-2 run to take a four point lead and force a Golden Eagle time out. The Niners would never lead by less than two, closing out the game on a kill by Newell.

Charlotte trailed for most of game one and was down by as much as five points, before taking their first lead at 22-21. They led until Southern Miss tied the score and then took a one-point advantage at 27-26, leading to a Charlotte time out. Coming out of the huddle, Charlotte began setting Newell, who had three of the team's final four kills to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead in the match.

Southern Miss returns to action, Saturday, against East Carolina.
