Softball Concludes Fall Season

The team finished the weekend with a 1-3-1 mark, including an 11-2 win over
Head Coach Gay McNutt said the team needs to improve in some areas in preparation for the 2005 season.
?We?re not satisfied with our performance in
McNutt said that she has been pleased with the returning players and thinks the team will be in top form once the season begins.
?Our returners look good, and our newcomers are very steady,? McNutt said. ?The team will be swinging the bats every day, and we expect our offense to be just as good as last year, if not better. We?re going to be very solid in the infield, and I believe Danielle Wymer and Jessica Saunier will lead us on the mound. We need to get things situated in the outfield, with only one senior out there.
?I look for a good season,? McNutt said. ?I think this will be a good group once we get some things ironed out.?
For the fall, sophomore Melissa Prouty led the team with a .417 batting average. She finished in a tie for the team lead in RBIs (5) with junior Jessica Huerta and freshman Jennifer Fox. Freshman Jessica Myers was second on the team with a .400 batting average and eight hits. Huerta finished with a team-high nine hits, 15 total bases, and seven runs scored.
Southern Miss returns six position starters and two pitchers from last year?s team that finished 33-26 overall, and 19-4 in Conference USA, as the team won the regular-season championship. The Lady Eagles also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001, competing in the NCAA Region 7 Stanford hosted regional.
