Softball Hosts Fall Tournament
HATTIESBURG,
The Fall Classic was originally set for Oct. 9, but rain forced the postponement of the tournament until today.
In the team?s first game, Lady Eagle freshmen pitchers Krystal Crooks and Shae Naramore combined to pitch a shutout, limiting William Carey to only three hits.
Southern Miss put on an offensive display, scoring six runs in the first inning and eight runs in the fourth inning, on its way to a 20-0 victory.
The Lady Eagles got three RBIs from sophomore Melissa Prouty and senior Diane Hammes, as each finished with two and three hits each respectively. Junior Jessica Huerta had three hits, runs and two RBIs, while juniors Ashley Davis and Charity Butler and freshman Jessica Meyers each finished with two RBIs. The team hit four doubles, one each from Prouty, Davis, Myers, and junior Ashley Brenan, and three triples, one each from Huerta, Myers, and
In the doubleheader nightcap against SLU, the team dropped an 8-0 decision in the first game, and a tough 7-6 defeat in the second.
In the second game, the Lady Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the first inning, and led 5-3 entering the fifth inning, only to see Southeastern La. score four runs in the inning to take a 7-5 lead.
Southern Miss cut the lead to one on a RBI base hit by Myers in the bottom of the seventh, but left the game-tying run on base.
Hureta leads the team with a .667 batting average, five runs scored, nine total bases, and six hits. Prouty is second with a .660 average, while Myers and Davis are hitting .571 and .375 thus far in fall action.
Davis leads the team with four RBIs, while Huerta and Hammes each have two stolen bases.
