Southern Miss Volleyball Defeats South Alabama, 3-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss Lady Eagle volleyball team had to use all five games in posting a much-needed win, defeating South Alabama 3-2 (30-27, 30-18, 24-30, 22-30, 15-11). Southern Miss improved to 5-11, while South Alabama dropped to 1-12.

Freshmen Nicole Rock, Morgan Johnson and Kaitlyn Deutsch each recorded 10 kills, while Amy Truong just missed a triple-double with nine kills, 37 assists and 24 digs. Amanda Blunck added 15 digs. USA?s Jenna Swilley led all players with 16 kills, Morgan Flarity had 15, Kim Courchesne had 13 and Whitney Sanders added 12 kills. Shannon VanAntwerp had 18 digs.

?I thought we started out strong tonight,? Head Coach Ricci Luyties said. ?We had some breakdowns in our communications, but we were able to overcome that. We just need to finish strong in these matches.?

Southern Miss jumped out quickly in the fifth game, taking a 5-1 lead and built that lead to 11-5 before South Alabama cut the lead to two, 12-10. The Lady Eagles closed out the game with a kill from Johnson for a 15-11 win.

Southern Miss held off a late rally by USA in game one to win, 30-27. The Lady Eagles followed with a strong performance in game two, taking advantage of the Jaguars poor hitting performance for a 30-18 victory.

South Alabama bounced back to take games three and four, behind strong play from Flarity and Swilley. USA finished game two with an attach percentage of .351 then followed that with an attack percentage of .320 in game four.

Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday, when the Lady Eagles travel to New Orleans for a match with Tulane. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
