Softball Set For Fall Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? The Southern Miss Fall Classic Softball Tournament, postponed Saturday because of rain, will be played Wednesday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.

While the entire field will be unable to attend, the tournament will feature three games and three teams, Southern Miss, William Carey, and Southeastern Louisiana. Admission is free of charge.

?The players are ready to play,? Southern Miss Head Softball Coach Gay McNutt said. ?We were disappointed that the rain canceled the whole tournament, but at least we?re playing some games before we go to Houston.?

Saturday?s tournament was to include Delta State., Jackson State., William Carey, and Southeastern Louisiana, in an all-day, eight-game tournament. Six of the games were to take place at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, with two at William Carey Field. Each team was scheduled to play three games, except Delta St., who was scheduled for four.

Southern Miss returns six starters and two pitchers from a team that finished 33-26, including a 19-4 mark in Conference USA that garnered the regular season championship. The Lady Eagles also earned a postseason berth for the first time in two years, as they participated in the NCAA Region 7 Tournament hosted by Stanford.

Following the Fall Classic, the team will take part in the Spring Klein College Classic in Spring Klein, Texas, Oct. 16-17. Participating teams will include Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas A&M, Texas State, and Alvin Community College.

Southern Miss opens its 2005 season Saturday, Feb. 5, in a home doubleheader against Jackson State., scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
