Lady Eagle Volleyball Sweeps Saturday Matches, Wins MSU Invitational
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle volleyball team defeated both Tennessee-Martin and Mississippi State on Saturday, sweeping all matches in the MSU Invitational and finishing in first place in the event.
With the title, Southern Miss (7-1) is off to its best-ever start through eight matches, surpassing 6-2 marks from both the 1987 and 1988 seasons.
The Lady Eagles, under third-year coach Santiago Restrepo, dropped UT-Martin 3-0 (30-16, 33-31, 30-24), earlier today and then defeated host Mississippi State, 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-19), in the final match of the tournament.
Southern Miss landed two players -- Nicki Tribble and Andrea Bush -- on the all-tournament team, while Tribble took home Most Valuable Player honors. For the tournament, Tribble led all players with 55.5 points, including a team-high 48 kills and a second-best 39 digs. Bush finished the tournament with 44.5 points, while fellow senior Bridget Files had 49.5 points in the event.
The Lady Eagle made quick work of both Saturday opponents. In the early match against UT-Martin, Tribble and Files paced the attack with 16 kills each, and Bush had 12. Junior setter Amy Truong chipped in with 44 assists.
Against MSU, Tribble had a match-high 16 points, while Files and Bush followed with 12.5 and 10.5 points, respectively. Tribble also had 14 kills in the match.
Southern Miss returns to action next week, as it travels to compete in the Air Force Tournament. The team plays matches against McNeese State, Navy and the Air Force.
