Southern Miss Blanks UNO, Picks Up Fourth Win
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Lady Eagles picked up their fourth win of the season, Wednesday, with a 3-0 victory over visiting New Orleans at USM's Payne Center.
The win was the third in a row for Southern Miss, which improved to 4-1 overall. UNO fell to 1-3.
The Lady Eagles jumped all over the Privateers in the first two games, taking them easily 30-19 and 30-21. But the final game was a barn-burner that ended in Southern Miss' eventual 32-30 win.
"Our intensity kind of died down in the second game, and it was tough to get back in the third game," Southern Miss Head Coach Santiago Restrepo said. "We almost let the game slip away, but we came through in the end. That shows a lot of character for our team."
Seniors Bridget Files and Nicki Tribble again paced the Lady Eagle attack. Files led all players with 15.5 points, including 13 kills, while Tribble had 12.5 points and 12 kills. Andrea Bush followed with eight points. Amy Troung had all but one of the team's 37 assists.
For UNO, Jennifer Cruz scored 15 points in the match and had a game-high 15 kills. Anais Urdaz chipped in with 12 points and 10 kills. Kylee Bauer led the team with 23 assists.
Now, the Lady Eagles take to the road again as they compete in the Mississippi State Tournament, Friday and Saturday. Southern Miss takes on Austin Peay, at 4 p.m., Friday, before battling UT-Martin and Mississippi State on Saturday.
