Southern Miss Wins Forrest General Classic Title
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - With three wins in two days, the Southern Miss volleyball team picked up its second tournament title of the season, taking the Forrest General Volleyball Classic championship, Saturday, at the USM Payne Center.
The Lady Eagles (13-2) defeated Louisiana-Lafayette (4-9) in the final match of the tournament to secure the title. Southern Miss won the contest in straight games (30-26, 30-18, 30-16).
"It was a very good team performance," Southern Miss Head Coach Santiago Restrepo said. "Everybody contributed, our passing was good and our defense finally played the way I want it to. We had a good combination with our play this tournament."
Bridget Files, who was selected as the tournament's most valuable player, again led Southern Miss with 17.5 points in the final, including 12 kills. Nicki Tribble added 16 points and had 11 kills, while Andrea Bush had a team-high 13 kills and scored 14.5 points.
Setter Amy Truong -- the Lady Eagles' second all-tournament selection -- picked up 36 set assists in the match.
Stacy Liverett finished with 10 points for Louisiana-Lafayette and had seven kills, while Lesley Tough added nine kills. Beth Henson had 22 assists in the match.
Arkansas-Little Rock defeated Jackson State, 3-0, in the previous match to finish the tournament in second place with a 2-1 record. For the Lady Trojans, Ivana Vracar had 27 points (24 kills) and Ivana Kuzmic added 24 points (17 kills). Jackson State's Verita White had 15 kills in the loss.
Along with Files and Truong, four other players were named to the all-tournament team. Vracar (UALR), Kuzmic (UALR), Henson (La.-Lafayette) and White (JSU) all made the team.
