Southern Miss Wins Again, Outlasts UALR, 3-1
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team had one of its tougher tests of the season, Friday, but like 10 other times, the Lady Eagles came away with a win.
Southern Miss (11-2) defeated Arkansas-Little Rock (7-4) in the second match of the Forrest General SportsCare Volleyball Classic, 3-1, Friday, at the USM Payne Center.
The Lady Eagles took the opening game, 30-21, before dropping the second game, 30-28. But Southern Miss battled back to take the final two games, 30-19 and 30-25, and the eventual win.
Bridget Files paced the Southern Miss attack with 23 kills and five total blocks on the night. With the performance, Files became the second Lady Eagle to surpass the 1,000-kill barrier this season. Andrea Bush, who had 18 kills tonight, surpassed the mark earlier this season. Nicki Tribble followed with 20 kills, while Amy Truong led the team with 66 assists.
For UALR, Larisa Durmisevic had a team-high 21 kills, while Ivana Vracar followed with 19 kills.
In earlier tournament action, Louisiana-Lafayette defeated Jackson State in straight games. In the match, Beth Henson led La.-Lafayette with 15 kills and five service aces.
The Classic continues Saturday with four matches on the slate, beginning with Arkansas-Little Rock and La.-Lafayette at 10 a.m. Southern Miss takes on Jackson State in the following match, at noon. The four teams swap opponents for the remaining two matches, set for 2 p.m., and 4 p.m.
