Lady Eagles Top Ole Miss, Pick Up 10th Win
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The record start for the Southern Miss Lady Eagle volleyball continued, Tuesday, with a 3-0 win over intrastate rival Ole Miss at the USM Payne Center.
With the win, Southern Miss and Head Coach Santiago Restrepo improved to 10-2 on the season, adding to the best start in school history. The 3-0 victory (30-24, 30-24, 30-26) also was the second home win of the season, as the Lady Eagles defeated UNO on Sept. 3. Ole Miss fell to 1-10 with the loss.
Southern Miss was down 10-4 in the first game of the match before junior setter Amy Truong put the Lady Eagles ahead for good with the 11-10 lead and eventual 3-24 win. After taking the second game by the same score, Southern Miss again fought back from a six-point deficit to pick up the third game and sweep the match.
Nicki Tribble paced the Southern Miss attack with a game-high 21.5 points, including 16 kills. Bridget Files followed with 13.5 points and also had 11 kills. Tribble and Andrea Bush also led the team with four service aces.
For Ole Miss, Rachel Refenes had 13.5 points, while Megan McCune added 12 points. Both players led the team with 10 kills each.
Southern Miss remains home for the next three matches as it hosts the Forrest General SportsCare Volleyball Classic at the Payne Center. Along with the Lady Eagles, Arkansas-Little Rock, Jackson State and Louisiana-Lafayette all participate. The event begins Friday.
