Southern Miss Volleyball Team Gets Second
Southern Miss Volleyball Team Finishes Second at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Invite
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas ? Southern Miss took second place at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sea Island Shrimp House Classic, defeating TAMU-CC in three games, 30-23, 30-17, 30-16. The Lady Eagles improved to 3-1.
Nicki Tribble and Andrea Bush led the Golden Eagle attack with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, for a combined 27 points. Melanie Travis and Sarah Hill recorded five kills, each.
"We put two good matches together," Head Coach Santiago Restrepo said. "I was pleased with the way they played defense and our offensive game. It's still early and we need to improve in several phases, but I was pleased with our performanced this tournament."
Both teams traded points in the first game, before the Lady Eagles went on a 9-4 run, taking an 11-6 lead. The Islanders pulled within three points, 20-17, before Southern Miss scored five unanswered points for a 25-17 lead. TAMU-CC closed to within five points, 25-20, but that was as close as the Islanders would get and finished the game with a 30-23 win.
In a game two and three, Southern Miss used a big defensive game in the back row and at the net. The Lady Eagles won game two 30-17 and followed with a 30-16 win in game three.
Southern Miss returns to action, Wednesday, Sept. 5, hosting UNO at 7 p.m., in the Payne Center.
