UAB Blanks Lady Eagles, 1-0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? The Southern Miss softball team fell to UAB today, 1-0, at George Ward Park. The third shutout of the series ended in favor of the Blazers, though the Lady Eagles outhit UAB, 6-4.
The win allowed UAB (28-25, 10-14) to advance to the Conference USA tournament, held this week, May 8-10, in Houston, Texas. The Blazers were battling Saint Louis for the final seed in the tournament, but the Billikens fell to East Carolina, 3-2 and ended the series against the Pirates with three-straight losses.
Southern Miss (27-28, 12-12) will be the fifth seed in the league tourney and face fourth-seed Louisville in the first round of the C-USA tournament on Thursday, May 8, at Noon. The Lady Eagles clinched a bracket position with their two wins over UAB, yesterday, Saturday, May 3, 1-0 and 2-0.
UAB?s Kerri Foster (14-13) won the pitchers? dual over Danielle Wymer (5-11), though Foster, a senior, surrendered more hits (6-to-4) and walks (2-to-1) than the freshman. Foster struck out five, while Wymer recorded two strikeouts.
Beth Mullins belted a solo home run in the third inning for the only run production of the contest. Mullins hit 2-for-3, and Kristin Stanfill batted 2-for-2, as both were the only two Blazers who produced hits in the contest.
The Lady Eagles placed runners in scoring position in four innings, but none were plated, as Southern Miss stranded eight runners on the bags.
Heather Bell led USM, hitting 2-for-3. The junior continues to lead the Lady Eagles, improving her batting average to .283 on the year. Amanda Brown, Auriel Jenkins, Tammy Edwards and Sarah Boyd each collected a hit.
