Lady Eagles Take Two Over UAB, Clinch Tourney Spot

Southern Miss also improved its league record to 12-11 (27-27 overall) and can clinch a higher seed, either fourth or fifth, in the C-USA tournament with another win over UAB (27-26, 9-14) tomorrow, starting at 1 p.m. The league tourney is May 8-10 in Houston, Texas.
Game One: Southern Miss 1, UAB 0
Jessica Holaway (14-14) pitched her third-straight shutout in as many starts, and her eighth shutout of the season. The junior has not surrendered a run in her last 20 innings pitched, and in that span, she has given up only seven hits.
Holaway tossed a one-hitter, though she held the Blazers hitless in the first five innings. She recorded three walks and four strikeouts.
With two outs in the top of the third inning, Auriel Jenkins singled to right center and allowed Heather Bell to score the only run of the game. Both Jenkins and Bell ended the opener with 1-for-2 hitting performances.
Amanda Brown and Sarah Boyd each recorded doubles. Boyd batted 1-for-3 in game one, and Jessica Huerta hit 1-for-2.
UAB pitcher Kerri Foster (13-13) stood toe-to-toe with Holaway, as the Blazer fanned 11 Lady Eagles. Foster gave up five hits, one run and three walks, despite recording the loss.
Game Two: Southern Miss 2, UAB 0
Danielle Hatfield recorded her second-straight shutout over a league opponent, and she has surrendered two runs in her last 31 innings and tossed three shutouts in her last four starts. Hatfield is 4-0 in her last five appearances and holds the best winning percentage on the team with an 8-3 record.
The junior pitched a four-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts against the Blazers. It was her fourth shutout of the season.
Ashley Brenan knocked out her second home run of the season in the fourth inning. On the first pitch she faced, the freshman smashed a two-run blast over left field, scoring Boyd on the homer. Brenan was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs in the nightcap.
Brown hit 1-for-3 in game two and finished the day batting a combined three-for-seven. Jenkins batted 1-for-1 with two sacrifice hits, and Tammy Edwards and Laura Smith each hit 1-for-3.
Amanda Byrne led the Blazers with a 2-for-3 plate performance. Kelli Thompson (12-9) recorded the loss, surrendering six hits, two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.
