Lady Eagles Lose Series Finale at DePaul
Chicago, Ill. ? DePaul continued its dominance of Southern Miss here Sunday with a 6-0 victory in the final game of a three-game conference softball series. The No. 10 Blue Demons, 24-2 (11-1 C-USA), out hit the Golden Eagles, 17-23 (3-9 C-USA), 10-2 to sweep the series.
DePaul swept the Saturday doubleheader, 2-0 and 11-0 (five innings).
The game was the final game of a nine-game road swing that took the Lady Eagles to Louisville for three games, to Arkansas for a twinbill, to Jackson, Miss., for a single game and to Chicago, Ill., for the final three games of the lengthy road trip. Southern Miss now returns home for four games, starting with a three-game weekend series against Charlotte, as part of Eagle Fest Weekend that will feature the annual Black & Gold spring football game and a baseball series, also against Charlotte.
DePaul came out swinging in the first inning and scored two runs to get the momentum going. Liz Bouck (3-for-3) and Sarah Martz (2-for-4) both singled to the shortstop to lead off the inning. Both runners advanced on a Southern Miss error. Sarah Douglas (1-for-2) came through with a single to center field that allowed Martz and Bouck to score.
The Blue Demons added a single run in the third, and then put the game away with three more in the fourth frame. DePaul collected 10 hits, to just two for Southern Miss, one each by Ashley Davis and Heather Bell.
Southern Miss attempted to rally in the top of the fifth inning when Davis led off with a double to right field. A walked batter after her put two on the bases but the Golden Eagles couldn?t advance after DePaul?s defense put three away on a fielder?s choice, a ground out, and a strike out.
Jessica Holaway went the first 3.1 innings for the Lady Eagles, and took the loss, dropping her record to 9-12. Lindsay Chouinard picked up her 16th win of the season. She threw a two-hitter, struck out eight batters, and allowed no runs.
