Tigers Defeat Lady Eagles, 7-3
BATON ROUGE, La. ? The Southern Miss softball team fell to 10th-ranked LSU this evening, 7-3, at Tiger Park. Despite the loss, the Lady Eagles produced the most runs against the Tigers in the last 10 meetings.
LSU scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth, and the Tigers ended a 3-3 tie and took a 7-3 advantage. Julie Weise and Alicia Owen each lined RBI singles in the frame, scoring LaDonia Hughes and pinch runner Stephanie Hill, respectively. Wiese also scored on a wild pitch, and Tessa Lynam came home on a miscue by USM shortstop Ashley Davis.
The Lady Eagles collected three runs in the fourth inning to knot the score with their only hit production in the game, with four hits. Three consecutive singles by freshmen Davis, Ashley Brenan and Jessica Huerta plated, in order, pinch runner Diane Hammes, Sarah Boyd and Erica King.
The three runs are the most scored by Southern Miss against LSU since 2000, when the Lady Eagles lost to the Tigers, 4-3. In the last six meetings, five were shutout victories for LSU.
The Tigers scored one run in the third when Owen?s sacrifice fly allowed Christy Conner to go home. Two runs in the bottom of the second got LSU on the board, as Blair Smith?s double plated Lynam, and Smith crossed the plate on Jennie Reeves? single.
Kristen Schmidt improved to 29-10 on the year, going the distance and recording four hits, three runs, two walks and 11 strikeouts.
Hughes led the Tigers with a 3-for-4 hitting performance. Conner was perfect at the plate 2-for-2, and Owen collected two RBIs in the contest.
Lady Eagle starting pitcher Danielle Wymer went four innings, surrendering eight hits, five earned runs and three walks. The freshman falls to 5-10 on the year.
The Lady Eagles travel to Birmingham, Ala., this weekend for their final C-USA series of the season against UAB. Southern Miss and the Blazers battle in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3, at 1 p.m. and in a single game on Sunday, May 4, at 1 p.m.
