HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team faces 11th-ranked LSU on Tuesday, April 29, in the Lady Eagles? final non-conference game, starting at 6:30 p.m., at Tiger Park, in Baton Rouge, La. The game will have Live Stats on SouthernMiss.com.
The contest will be the third meeting of the season between the Tigers and the Lady Eagles. LSU defeated Southern Miss, 3-0, in the Purple & Gold Challenge on March 1, in Baton Rouge, La. The Tigers also collected a 14-0 win over the Lady Eagles on April 16, in Hattiesburg, Miss., and have won the last seven games against USM, holding a 9-4 advantage.
Southern Miss holds a four-game winning streak, including a three-game sweep over East Carolina last weekend. The Lady Eagles have won seven of their last 10 games.
Heather Bell climbed to the top of the team?s batting charts last weekend. The junior holds a .282 batting average (31-for-110), with four doubles, two triples, five home runs and 19 RBIs.
She was named this week?s Conference USA Hitter of the Week after batting .667 (6-for-9) in four games with two runs, a double, two home runs and four RBIs. The Castiac, Calif., native hit 5-for-7 (.714) in last weekend?s three-game series against East Carolina.
Ashley Davis hit 7-for-11, .636, last week, with three doubles, improving her season total to a team-best 10 doubles.
Jessica Holaway did not surrender a run in her three appearances last week, collecting three wins and two shutouts, and earned C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors. On the year, she is 13-14 with a 2.01 ERA, seven shutouts, three saves, 49 walks and 112 strikeouts.
After LSU defeated Southern Miss on April 16, the Tigers were 8-1 in the games that followed. LSU has won 17 of its last 18 contests and currently hold a four-game winning streak.
Camille Harris leads the Tigers with a .337 batting average. Tessa Lynam follows, hitting .317, and LaDonia Hughes is batting .301.
Kristin Schmidt is 28-10 with a 0.96 ERA, 12 shutouts and 2 split shutouts, three saves, 61 walks and 274 strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles travel to Birmingham, Ala., this weekend for their final C-USA series of the season against UAB. Southern Miss and the Blazers battle in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3, at 1 p.m. and in a single game on Sunday, May 4, at 1 p.m.
