Lady Eagles Take Two Against ECU

Game One: Southern Miss 5, East Carolina 0
Jessica Holaway pitched her second-straight shutout, blanking the Pirates (20-29, 2-18) with a two-hit performance. The junior improved to 12-14, recording two walks and five strikeouts in her seventh shutout of the season.
The Lady Eagles (24-26, 9-11) collected three home runs in the opener, tying the school record for most home runs in a game. Davis started the scoring in the second inning, when she reached home on an error by shortstop Christine Sheridan, who was fielding a grounder by Jessica Huerta but mishandled the ball.
Sarah Boyd collected a pair of homers on the day. Her first blast came in the third inning, a solo shot that made the score 2-0. Heather Bell and Amanda Brown popped back-to-back home runs in the fourth, increasing the lead to 4-0.
Ashley Brenan scored pinch runner Kim Bishop in the sixth on a double to left center to make the lead the inevitable final, 5-0.
Kristen Johnson and Brandi Benedict added a hit each for the Pirates. Brently Bridgeforth (9-11) got the decision, pitching 3.2 innings with four hits, three earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
Game Two: Southern Miss 4, East Carolina 0
Boyd blasted her second home of the day, and Heather Bell hit a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI in the Lady Eagles? second shutout of the day, and third consecutively.
Danielle Hatfield pitched a four-hitter to pick up her third shutout of the season. She surrendered three walks and struck out one, improving to 7-3.
Boyd ended the scoring with her solo bomb in the sixth. Bishop picked up her second run of the day, crossing the plate on a wild pitch in the fourth.
Huerta tripled in the second to start the scoring for Southern Miss, as Brenan scored on the play. Bell followed with a single up the middle to plate Huerta.
Maggie Lingo (4-12) got the loss for the Pirates. She pitched 5.2 innings, recording seven hits, four runs, one walk and one strikeout. Krista Jessup batted 2-for-3 in the nightcap, leading ECU.
Both teams battle again tomorrow, Sunday, April 27, at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, at 1 p.m. This will be the final home game of the season for the Lady Eagles, and they will honor seniors Kim Bishop, Amanda Brown and Tammy Edwards in a pre-game ceremony.
