Southern Miss Soccer Adds Eight to Next Year?s Squad
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss women?s soccer coach Matt Clark announced the addition of eight signees who will be members of the 2003 Lady Eagles? team.
?We had to cover a lot of positions since we had six players graduate,? said Clark who begins his fourth season leading the Lady Eagles. ?This is a talented class and our largest recruiting class since I have been here. Since we are going to be young next year, with only two seniors, many of these players will be filling some key roles, but this is an athletic class with a lot of speed that is very capable of replacing our graduating players.?
Carly Barkley (Forward/Midfielder ? Delta, British Columbia), Sarah Ann Brennan (Forward/Midfielder ? Metairie, La.), Lindsey Brinton (Midfielder ? Tupelo, Miss.), Kara Harshbarger (Center Midfielder ? Long Beach, Miss.), Andrea Kerkhoff (Forward ? Otterbein, Ind.), Lindsey Kliebert (Defender ? Brandon, Miss.), Melissa Planells (Midfielder ? Mandeville, La.), Katelin Jo Warmington (Midfielder/Defender ? St. Louis, Mo.) comprise the list of newcomers who Clark believes will help his team in the upcoming season.
The following are comments Clark makes on each newcomer:
Carly Barkley, Forward/Midfield, Delta, British Columbia
?Carly is the sleeper among the group. She has good size, standing 5-10, and is a great goal scorer. She provides speed, quickness, great ball handling skills and can pass the ball very well. She can be an immediate impact player, and that?s what we are expecting her to do.?
Sarah Brennan, Forward/Midfielder, Metairie, La.
?Sarah is a goal scorer. She is very good with her left foot, and of course, you can never have enough lefties. She is a deadly free-kick artist. She has deceiving quickness and very skillful.?
Lindsay Brinton, Midfielder, Tupelo, Miss.
?Lindsay possesses great skills, good speed and provides the size that we need since she is 5-9. The key with her is getting her to play at the college level and speeding up her decision-making. She has all the physical attributes that makes us, as coaches, very excited.?
Kara Harshbarger, Center Midfielder, Long Beach, Miss.
?Kara is the best player coming out of Mississippi this year. She is strong and a fierce tackler. Good performer in the air. We are excited about having a strong in-state player who will contribute to our program, as much as she should.?
Andrea Kerkhoff, Forward, Otterbein, Ind.
?Andrea is the first Division I athlete to be signed out of her school. She actually recruited us. She came to our summer camps as a rising senior last year, and she is a pleasant surprise because she can definitely play at this level. She is going to be a significant contributor for us next year. She can play at any of our forward and outside midfield positions.?
Lindsey Kliebert, Defender, Brandon, Miss.
?Lindsey has some great attributes and will need to develop the rest of her game. She can see action at a lot of positions. ?
Melissa Planels, Midfielder, Mandeville, La.
?Melissa has good pace and can play either right or left midfield. She is small but speedy, and I think she has a chance to be an impact player for us before her junior year.?
Katelin Jo Warmington, Midfielder/Defender, St. Louis, Mo.
?Katelin reads the game well and possesses above average speed. She has played with a good club team and is a proven winner. She will see a lot of time as a first-year player.?
