HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team is winding down its home schedule with the final midweek contest being played tomorrow, Wednesday, April 23, against Southeastern Louisiana. The single game against the Lions will have Live Stats on SouthernMiss.com.
The two teams battled each other earlier this season, when the Lady Eagles traveled to Hammond, La., on Feb. 19. Jessica Holaway pitched her first shutout of the season against the Lions, tossing a two-hit, eight-strikeout performance, and Southern Miss picked up a 6-0 victory.
Wednesday?s matchup will be the 29th meeting of the two teams, and the Lady Eagles own a 17-11 advantage. SLU and Southern Miss first met in 1985, when USM swept the Lions in a doubleheader at Hammond, La., 6-0 and 7-1. Since the program?s reinstatement in 1999, Southern Miss has never lost to Southeastern Louisiana in five meetings.
Amanda Brown (.259), Tammy Edwards (.255), Auriel Jenkins (.254) and Sarah Boyd (.254) rank at the top of the Lady Eagle hitting charts. Brown claims 12 runs, six doubles, a triple, a home run and eight RBIs, and Edwards has three doubles, two triples, a home run and 10 RBIs. Jenkins leads the squad with five home runs and 26 runs scored and has four doubles, two triples and 16 RBIs, and Boyd holds the team title with 17 RBIs, shares the lead with seven doubles and has two home runs.
Holaway leads the pitching staff with a 2.18 ERA and 100 strikeouts. At 10-14 on the year, the junior has five shutouts and three saves.
Ashley Walker is batting .318 to lead the Lions. She has 17 runs and 11 stolen bases. Sarah Gascon follows with a .269 batting average, producing three doubles, three triples and 10 RBIs. Karin Smith is SLU?s top power hitter with six home runs and 23 RBIs.
Emily Stelly is the top pitcher for the Lions. She is 7-16 with a 3.10 ERA, three shutouts, one save and 67 strikeouts.
Southern Miss hosts its final Conference USA series of the season this weekend. East Carolina comes to Hattiesburg for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26, at 1 p.m. A single game against the Pirates will be played on Sunday, April 27, at 1 p.m. All games will have Live Stats on SouthernMiss.com.
