Game One: Southern Miss 5, Charlotte 0
Danielle Hatfield pitched a six-hit shutout to start off the doubleheader with a 5-0 win for Southern Miss (20-23, 6-9 in C-USA). The junior recorded three walks and three strikeouts in her second shutout of the season and improved to 5-3.
Seven Lady Eagles recorded hits in the opener, and Amanda Brown was 1-for-2 with a double and two runs. Heather Bell blasted her third home run of the season, and Jessica Huerta was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Southern Miss scored a run in each of the first four innings. Charity Butler crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the first inning, and Brown made it home in the second, after she doubled and scored on a throwing error by leftfielder Lynne LaPorte.
Pinch runner Kim Bishop scored on a wild pitch in the third, and Huerta?s bunt single in the fourth plated Brown who sprinted home from third base. Bell ended the Lady Eagles? scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth.
Charlotte (13-24, 4-13) loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, as LaPorte singled down the left field line to advance Autumn Lawson to second and Melanie Thevenote to third. With no outs, Hatfield held strong, striking out Lindsay Fleming and then throwing out Thevenote at home to get the first two outs. The 49ers left the bags filled when Shannon Carson?s grounder allowed shortstop Ashley Davis to throw out Laurie Roycroft at second.
Carson took the loss for Charlotte. She falls to 2-5 after giving up seven hits, four earned runs, five walks, one strikeout and six wild pitches.
Game Two: Southern Miss 4, Charlotte 2
Davis batted 2-for-3 in the second game. She collected a double and two RBIs and led the Lady Eagles on the day, batting a combined 3-for-6.
Danielle Wymer (5-8) pitched the complete game, surrendering eight hits, one earned run, two walks and fanning two. Tammy Edwards batted 1-for-2 with a run and two RBIs, and Auriel Jenkins hit 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Lady Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Jenkins scored from third base, when Edwards reached base after second baseman Denise Atmar mishandled a throw while covering first base. Davis drove in Edwards and Sarah Boyd with a double to right center field, and Southern Miss claimed an early 3-0 lead.
Charlotte got on the board in the third, when Karianne Huffstetler came home on a passed ball by Huerta. Edwards single down the left field line scored Jenkins and gave the Lady Eagles a 4-1 lead.
Three 49er batters hit 2-for-3 in the finale. Lindsay Flemming collected two hits and an RBI in the fourth, scoring Thevenote. Huffstetler and Atmar also batted 2-for-3.
