Softball Splits With Arkansas

Game One: Arkansas 2, Southern Miss 1 (9 innings)
Arkansas used extra innings to pull off the win in the opener, 2-1. Southern Miss (16-20) held a 1-0 lead throughout the majority of the game, but the Lady Razorbacks (17-25) scored the tying run in the seventh and the winning run in the ninth to end their seven-game losing streak.
In the bottom of the ninth, Candice Swan lined her third hit of the game to left field, scoring Julie Young from second base for the winning run. Swan led the Razorbacks with a 3-for-4 plate performance, collecting a run and an RBI.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ashley Carter's sacrifice fly tied the game, 1-1, scoring Swan who started the inning with a double. Swan stole third base and crossed the plate on Carter's first sacrifice fly of the season.
Southern Miss scored in the first inning, when Auriel Jenkins came home on Sarah Boyd's single to center field. Jenkins ended the game hitting 1-for-1 with a run and a sacrifice hit, leaving the game in the third with an injury after sliding into first base on her sacrifice bunt.
Heather Schlictman went the distance to record the win. In nine innings, she surrendered four hits, one run, two walks and collected five strikeouts.
Jessica Holaway (8-10) received the loss, also going the distance, and giving up eight hits, two runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
Game Two: Southern Miss 7, Arkansas 6
The Lady Eagles recovered in the nightcap, scoring five runs in the final two innings of a 7-6 comeback victory and ending a three-game losing streak.
Heather Bell collected three RBIs in the sixth, finishing the game 1-for-3, and Ashley Davis batted 2-for-3 with a run, a double and an RBI.
Tammy Edwards' ground out to the shortstop allowed Jenkins to come home for the Lady Eagles' winning run in the top of the seventh. Jenkins walked to start the inning, stole second and reached third when Charity Butler grounded
out to the first baseman.
Southern Miss pitcher Danielle Hatfield held strong in the bottom of the seventh, striking out the side, while facing Arkansas' top of the lineup. She improves to 4-2 on the year, recording 10 hits, five earned runs, one walk and six strikeouts.
With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Bell doubled to left, cleared the bags and knotted the score, 6-6. Boyd, Brown and pinch runner Erica King scored on the play. Pinch runner Kim Bishop started the scoring rally, when Davis singled up the middle.
Young scored her second run of the game, in the third, when Swan doubled to left center. Pinch runner Sarah Hill scored in the fifth off Kim Eiben's single, giving the Razorbacks a 6-2 lead.
Arkansas scored four runs in the second with Lauren Hendrix highlighting the frame with a two-RBI single, scoring Lisa Nieman and Mindy O'Malley and giving the Razorbacks the lead, 4-2. Young started the scoring off Swan's single to left field, and Stephanie Hunter scored the second run when O'Malley's single to center was mishandled by Jenkins.
Brown doubled to start the top of the second inning. She reached third when Ashley Brenan singled and advanced to second on a throw to the infield. Brown scored on a wild pitch, as Brenan reached third on the miscue and crossed the plate on Jessica Huerta's ground out to the shortstop, giving Southern Miss a 2-0 lead.
Schlichtman came in relief in the sixth inning and received the loss. She is now 7-12, as she recorded three hits, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
Arkansas' starting pitcher Valanna Lyons went five innings, facing three batters in the sixth, and recorded five hits, five runs, two walks and six strikeouts.
Southern Miss travels to Madison, Miss., to face Mississippi State in the F&M Bank Fastpitch Classic, a single game starting at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, April 3. The inaugural event will be held at Liberty Park.
