LAFAYETTE, La. ? The Southern Miss softball team extended its losing streak to seven games, as the Lady Eagles lost two games, today, to Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-0 and 13-5 (five innings). Danielle Gomez led the Lady Cajuns, hitting a combined two-game total 4-for-6 with four runs, a double, three home runs and nine RBIs.
Game Two: Louisiana-Lafayette 13, Southern Miss 5 (Five Innings)
UL Lafayette ended the game in the fifth when Jill Robertson smashed a three-run home run. Robertson scored Leslie Pierce and Crystal George on the bomb, giving ULL the 13-5 win.
The Lady Cajuns scored four runs in the fourth as George popped a solo shot over the left field fence. Gomez added a three-run homer, scoring Becky McMurtry and Tiffany Grayson.
Gomez scored the go-ahead run for the Lady Cajuns in the third inning, when her single to left allowed Grayson to come home. Joy Webre added a two-run homer, scoring Gomez on the play, and Lafayette held a 6-3 lead.
ULL knotted the game in the bottom of the first, 3-3. Gomez produced her second home run on the day, a two-run blast, scoring McMurtry. Brittany Bryant tripled to score Webre for the Lady Cajuns? third run.
Sarah Boyd blasted a three-run bomb in the top of the first to put the Lady Eagles on the scoreboard, plating Amanda Brown and Auriel Jenkins.
Afton Thoms improved to 3-0 on the year, pitching four innings and recording four hits, two runs and six strikeouts.
Danielle Hatfield suffered her first loss on the year, dropping to 1-1. She went two innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, two walks and one strikeout. Danielle Wymer came in relief and pitched two innings, recording four hits, seven runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
Game One: Louisiana-Lafayette 4, Southern Miss 0
Brooke Mitchell threw her first career no-hitter, as the Lady Cajuns handed Southern Miss its sixth-straight loss, 4-0. The sophomore hurler recorded five strikeouts and three walks and improved her season record to 5-2.
McMurtry popped a solo home run in the fourth to give ULL a 4-0 lead. She ended the game batting two-for-three with two runs, a double, a home run and an RBI.
Gomez got the Lady Cajuns on the board with a three-run bomb over the center field fence in the first inning. The freshman plated McMurtry and Grayson on her fourth home run of the season.
Jessica Holaway (3-8) recorded her sixth-straight loss with four hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
