Nebraska Game Moves To Thursday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss-Nebraska football game, originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, has been moved, and will be telecast by ESPN on Thursday night, Sept. 25, with game time set for 6:30 p.m., central time. In addition, the Saturday, Sept. 6, UAB game has been moved to Thursday, Sept. 4, and will be televised on ESPN2. The Nov. 20 game against TCU also is a Thursday night game that will be televised, giving the Golden Eagles three Thursday night games. Athletic Director Richard Giannini says the move is a positive one. "We're excited about the exposure the Thursday night telecast of the Nebraska game will give our University and the Pine Belt area," he said. "We will have the No. 1 ESPN crew, and the exclusive Thursday night game has become as big in college football as Monday night football is in the NFL. "We're also pleased with the UAB move to Thursday night. That gives us three Thursday night games, and the tremendous national exposure those games will give us will benefit our entire program and will be a major plus in such areas as recruiting and fund-raising." Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson sees the move as a positive one as well. ?We are pleased to play a nationally-televised contest on ESPN. On a Thursday, we will have the focus of the whole country,? said Pederson. ?It will be an electric atmosphere and will give us great exposure that we would not have had on Saturday.? Southern Miss will open the season Aug. 30, at California, meet UAB Sept. 4, in Birmingham, Ala., and then return home for games against Memphis (Sept. 13) and the Nebraska game. The 2003 schedule will include six home games for the second-straight season. With the schedule now finalized, season ticket information will be released in the next few days.
