Lady Eagles Lose to Houston, 5-2
BATON ROUGE, La. ? The Southern Miss softball team concluded its appearance in the Purple & Gold Challenge with a 5-2 loss to Houston in the semifinal round of bracket play.
Jeanie Davis scored, in the third inning, as a result of a dropped ball by right fielder Heather Bell, giving the Cougars (10-9) the 3-2 lead. Jenilee Skender sent a fly ball to right, and Bell misjudged its location, causing the ball to drop out of her glove. Davis reached base on a walk, advanced to second on Kristen Glowacz?s sacrifice bunt and scored on the error.
Brooke Johnson popped a solo home run in the fourth, and Arelis Ferreris added another insurance run with her solo bomb in the fifth inning, giving Houston the 5-2 win.
The Lady Eagles (7-9) recorded two runs in the second inning. Ashley Davis doubled to right center, and Bell singled to center and advanced to second on the throw from the outfield, scoring pinch runner Kim Bishop. Bell went to third on Laura Smith?s sacrifice bunt and scored on the squeeze play by Jessica Huerta.
Houston scored a run each in the first and second innings. Jaci Gonzalez put the Cougars on the scoreboard when she crossed the plate as a result of a throwing error by Ashley Brenan at third base. Michelle Keith started the second with a triple and scored on Johnson?s sacrifice fly.
Jenny Johnson (2-3) pitched the four-hitter for Houston. She gave up two runs and one walk and fanned seven.
Danielle Wymer (3-4) went four innings for Southern Miss. She recorded four hits, two earned runs and four walks. Danielle Hatfield came in relief in the fifth and collected two hits and one run.
The Lady Eagles will face Houston again this week, as both teams begin Conference USA play in Hattiesburg. The league series starts on Wednesday, March 5, with a doubleheader at 5 p.m., and a single game concludes the series on Thursday, March 6, at 1 p.m. All games will have live stats on SouthernMiss.com.
