Game One: Southern Miss 5, Northwestern State 0
Jessica Holaway collected her second shutout of the season, as the Lady Eagles defeated Northwestern State, 5-0. The junior pitched seven innings and recorded three hits and three strikeouts.
Tammy Edwards batted a perfect 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Heather Bell and Jessica Huerta each hit 2-for-3, as Bell collected a run and an RBI and Huerta produced a triple.
Edwards started the scoring when she singled in Auriel Jenkins in the third inning. Ashley Brenan plated Edwards on her single to center, and the Lady Eagles held a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Amanda Brown singled to second and scored Bell in the fifth, and Edwards blasted her first home run of the season, giving Southern Miss a 4-0 in the fifth inning. Bell finished the scoring in the seventh, when she plated pinch runner Kim Bishop on her single to left center.
Game Two: Southern Miss 4, Northwestern State 2
Four Lady Eagles collected two hits apiece in Southern Miss? 4-2 win in the nightcap. Huerta ended the night batting a two-game total of 4-for-6 with a triple and an RBI.
Jenkins produced her fourth home run of the season to start the USM scoring in the first inning. She batted 2-for-4 in the second game with two runs scored and an RBI.
In the second inning, Huerta singled to score Charity Butler, who hit a perfect two-for-two with two runs in game two. Butler scored again in the fourth inning, coming home when Bell reached base on a fielder?s choice, and Jenkins added her second run of the game in the fifth inning, scoring on a dropped fly ball that was hit by Sarah Boyd.
Northwestern State (2-18) narrowed the lead by scoring two runs in the sixth inning. ,b>Nicole Martin scored first for the Lady Demons when she crossed the plate on Lindsay Danzy?s ground out, and Sarina Noak came home on Katrina Walker?s single down the right field line.
Danielle Wymer (4-5) recorded the win in game two, pitching 6.1 innings with five hits, one walk and two strikeouts. The freshman also batted 2-for-3.
The Demons threatened again when they put two runners on base in the seventh inning with one out, but Danielle Hatfield came in relief and sat down the final two batters with a strikeout and a ground out that she retired herself with a throw to first base. Hatfield recorded her first save of the season.
The Lady Eagle travel to Lake Charles, La., and finish the tour of Louisiana, with a doubleheader at McNeese State, on Thursday, March 13, at 5 p.m.
