Gators Shut Out Lady Eagles, 7-0
GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? The Southern Miss softball team lost its second-straight game, as Florida picked up a 7-0 win against the Lady Eagles this afternoon. Florida now advances in the Gator Invitational as the No. 1 seed of bracket play, facing No. 4 Birmingham Southern at 3 p.m., Central Standard Time, this afternoon, and Southern Miss will be the No. 3 seed, playing second-seed Tennessee-Chattanooga at 5:30 p.m.
Amanda Brown, Sarah Boyd and Auriel Jenkins each recorded 1-for-2 batting in the game. Southern Miss pitcher Jessica Holaway (2-2) surrendered six earned runs, while recording three strikeouts and one walk.
The Gators (11-4) collected 14 hits, as Mylin Prieto batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Jackie Marchetta went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Prissie Walden was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and pitcher Jenny Gladding recorded a perfect 2-for-2 plate performance.
Improving her record to 4-2 on the year, Gladding collect her second shutout of the season. She finished the game, giving up three hits and fanning four.
Southern Miss (3-3) held Florida to a 1-0 lead, going into the bottom of the fourth. The Gators exploded in the frame, recording five runs on five hits and one error.
Gladding started the scorefest with a single up the middle, driving in pinch-runner Andrea Magura. Walden singled through the left side to score Prieto, and Marchetta?s two-RBI single drove in Houghton, who replaced Gladding on the base path, and Walden. Marchetta, then, scored when Lindsey Cameron reached base on a muffed ball by first basemen Tammy Edwards, giving the Gators the 6-0 lead.
Prieto scored again in the bottom of the fifth off pinch-hitter Laura Templeton?s single through the left side of the infield, ending the Gators? scoring for the game. Florida has recorded three-straight shutouts in the Gator Invitational.
The tournament concludes on Sunday, Feb. 16, with the consolation game, featuring the losers of today?s contests, at 10 a.m. (CST), and the championship game, the winners of today?s games, at 12:30 p.m. All games will feature Live Stats on SouthernMiss.com.
