Golden Eagles Improve With More Physical Practice MEMPHIS, Tenn.
The Golden Eagles (9-3) went full gear in the two-hour practice at the University of Memphis' Billy J. Murphy Athletic Complex, and Southern Miss Head Coach Jeff Bower was pleased with the improvements made over Friday's workout.
"It was a little bit better," Bower said. "We probably had our most physical practice of the postseason. I thought we got a lot accomplished and the next couple of days are going to be very critical."
Southern Miss has just three more practices before facing Mountain West Conference Champion Utah in the 2003 AXA Liberty Bowl, Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 2:30 p.m., in the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPN.
Bower knows that his team needs to be sharp over the remaining practice sessions and have a strong focus because of the challenges that the Utes (9-2) present.
"We are playing a very good football team, and we can't afford to make mistakes," Bower said. "We have to be ready to go, and we have to do a bit of a better job at being more consistent. Teams that play well in bowl games take care of their business on the practice field. They enjoy the bowl festivities, but also understand what they need to do to get ready."
The team will hold full practices on Sunday and Monday and then will have a final walk-through at the Liberty Bowl on Tuesday.
