Lady Eagles Ready For Conference USA Volleyball Tournament
HATTIESBURG, Miss - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle volleyball team had a record-setting 2003 regular season and now hopes to continue its success in the Conference USA Volleyball Tournament this weekend in New Orleans, La.
The 2003 Conference USA Volleyball Tournament is a four-day, single-elimination event at Tulane's Fogelman Arena in New Orleans. Twelve of the 14 league teams qualified for the tournament, with the top four seeds earning a first-round bye. The event begins Friday and culminates in the championship match on Monday.
As the No. 3 seed in the tournament, the Lady Eagles (27-5, 11-2 in C-USA) face the winner of the No. 6-No. 7 matchup between Marquette and DePaul, in the second round at 3 p.m., Saturday. The other three teams with first-round byes include regular season co-champions Cincinnati and Louisville as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, and Memphis and the fourth seed.
Southern Miss' three Lady Eagle seniors, Bridget Files, Nicki Tribble and Andrea Bush, have been a big reason for the team's success. Files continues to lead the team with 569.5 points this season and is third in kills (446). Files also has team-highs in digs (364) and blocks (137). Tribble is second in points (538.5) and has a team-high 466 kills. Bush is third with 517 points and is second in kills (456).
Setter Amy Truong leads the team in assists (1,438) and is tied with Tribble for the team lead in aces (49). Jazzmien Stephens is fourth overall in points scored (284.5).
Southern Miss also took three awards in Conference USA this season, including Head Coach Santiago Restrepo, who took home the league's biggest honor as Coach of the Year.
A pair of Southern Miss seniors -- outside hitter Andrea Bush and middle blocker Bridget Files -- were selected to the Conference USA second team, marking the first time that the team placed two members on an all-conference team since 1997.
