Southern Miss Volleyball Competes In First C-USA Road Matches
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Fresh off two Conference USA wins at home, the Southern Miss volleyball team takes to the road to compete in a pair of league matches against USF and UAB.
The Lady Eagles (17-3, 2-0) venture to Tampa, Fla, for a Friday match against the USF Bulls (8-10, 2-0) at 5 p.m. (CT). The team then visits Birmingham and the UAB Blazers (9-9, 2-0). The match is slated for Saturday at 7 p.m.
Southern Miss came up with a pair of wins in the league's opening weekend last week, winning the first-ever match over Houston and blanking TCU.
The 2003 Lady Eagles, under the direction of third-year Head Coach Santiago Restrepo, are in the midst of one of the best seasons in school history. With its 17 wins, Southern Miss has the most victories in a season since 21 matches were won in 1998. The team also has the best-ever record through 20 matches for a Lady Eagle squad, surpassing the previous best of 14-6 in 1998.
The team's three seniors -- Andrea Bush, Bridget Files and Nicki Tribble -- continue to lead the Southern Miss attack. Files and Tribble both lead the team with 340.5 points, while Tribble leads all players with 288 kills. Bush, currently a Conference USA Co-Player of the Week, is third on the team with 292.5 points and is tied with Files for second in kills (257). Setter Amy Truong has a team-high 832 assists.
USF is led by Shameka Mitchell, who shares this week's player of the week honors with Bush. Mitchell has a team-high 354 points and has 304 kills on the year.
Breanne Swenson and Martina Shields both lead the Blazers with 253 and 236.5 points, respectively. Karen Boyd follows with 236 points. Shields leads all players with 214 kills.
