Southern Miss Volleyball Drops Houston, 3-1
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss picked up an opening-night win in Conference USA with a 3-1 victory over Houston in volleyball action, Friday, at the USM Payne Center.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improved to 16-3 overall and 1-0 in the league. The Lady Cougars fell to 4-11 overall and 0-1. The victory also was Southern Miss' first all-time against Houston, with the Cougars winning the previous 12 meetings.
The Lady Eagles took the opening game, 30-25, but Houston battled to even the match with a second-game win, 31-29. Southern Miss then came from behind in each of the next two games, eventually winning 30-23 and 30-23.
Senior Andrea Bush had a big night from the floor, finishing with a season-high 32 points, including 30 kills. The 30-kill performance was one short of the school record of 31, held by both Stephanie Rector and Tosha Barnicoat. It also tied a career-high for Bush, matching 30-kill performances against UT-Martin and DePaul last season.
Bridget Files added 16.5 points (14 kills) and Nicki Tribble chipped in with 13 points (12 kills) and had a team-high 17 digs. Setter Amy Truong led all players with 52 assists.
For Houston, Kelly McAnelly and Loure Dews each had 20.5 points, including 18 and 17 kills, respectively. Cinthia Piva had 14 points (11 kills), while Jaci Gonzales had a match-high 19 digs. Mirela Vasconcellos had 48 assists,
The Lady Eagles return to action, Saturday, when they host TCU in the second league match of the weekend. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
