Johnson Named C-USA Football Player of the Week
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Southern Miss punter Luke Johnson was selected as this week's Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week.Johnson, a redshirt-sophomore from Laurel, Miss., earned the honor for his performance in the Golden Eagles' 27-6 league win over USF. In the game, he punted nine times for 409 yards, a 45.4 yard average. Included in the total was a 76-yard punt, the second-longest in school history behind Ray Guy's 93-yarder in 1972. Johnson also had three punts of 50 yards or more and placed five kicks inside the 20-yard line.
Johnson currently ranks 32nd in the nation and second in Conference USA in punting average, with 42.4 yards per kick. In his 51 punts this season, six of them have gone for touchbacks, five were fair-caught and 15 have landed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
Along with Johnson, DeAngelo Williams of Memphis and Kevin Kolb of Houston earned offensive player of the week honors. UAB's Justin Whitmire earned defensive honors.
Johnson is the fifth Southern Miss player to earn C-USA Player of the Week honors. Etric Pruitt earned the defensive honor the week of Sept. 8, while Michael Boley picked up the award the week of Oct. 6. Marvin Young was chosen as the special teams recipient the week of Sept. 15, and John Eubanks had the special teams honor the week of Oct. 6.
