Lady Eagle Softball Completes Fall Season
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle softball team recently completed its fall season last weekend, and fourth-year Head Coach Gay McNutt has been pleased with the fall workouts.
"I am very pleased with how we did," McNutt said. "Every game, we improved and worked on our mistakes. We had some good competition and the girls played hard. Overall, we did well."
The Lady Eagles opened the fall season with a 5-1 mark in the Southern Miss Fall Classic, and then picked up a pair of wins in the Spring Klein Tournament in Houston, Texas, over the weekend.
The two tournaments gave Southern Miss valuable experience in all phases of the game. But it is in the team's offense that the biggest improvement can be found.
"Our hitting has been real good," McNutt said. "We were much more aggressive at the plate, and that is something that we haven't been doing too well over the past two seasons.
"The fall season is all about seeing what you need to work on and improving on those things. It lets us know where our team is at as far as development. When we left Houston, the morale of the team was extremely high. We had a good fall season."
The Lady Eagles, who finished with a 28-30 record in 2003, now take a break before beginning off-season training. Practices for the spring season begin on the first day of the 2004 spring semester.
In the spring season, Southern Miss hosts 26 home games and also will compete in three invitational tournaments. The Lady Eagles open the regular season on Feb. 4 with a double header against Louisiana-Monroe at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
