Lady Eagles Split Volleyball Tourney Matches
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team won its first match of the day, defeating Alcorn State, 3-2, but lost its final match against Louisiana Tech, 1-3, while hosting the Lady Eagle Tournament, today at The Payne Center. Louisiana Tech won both of its matches, including a 3-0 sweep over Alcorn State.
Louisiana Tech 3, Southern Miss 1
The Lady Eagle won the first game of the match 30-16. With the scored tied, 10-10, Southern Miss strung together 14 unanswered kills to claim a commanding 24-10 lead. The Lady Eagles also outhit the Lady Techsters in percentage in the opening game, .469 to .192.
Louisiana Tech came back in game two with a 30-24 advantage and evened the match. The Lady Eagles committed 10 hitting errors in the second game. Games three and four were challenging performances by both squads, but Louisiana Tech came out ahead of both seesaw bouts.
Andrea Bush led all performers with 16 kills and 40 attacks. Bridget Files claimed 12 kills, and shared the match-best of 16 digs with Amy Truong. Crystal Zane finished with 40 assists.
Laura Osterhaus came off the bench to lead Louisiana Tech with 14 kills and a .423 hitting percentage. Cristine Sant?anna recorded 13 kills, and Brianna Sibley added 10 kills. Lia Mora finished with 46 assists.
Southern Miss 3, Alcorn State 2
The Lady Eagles held a 2-0 lead (30-16, 30-26), but the Lady Braves came back in games three and four, winning by two in both games (31-29, 31-29), to knot the match. Southern Miss held off ASU in the final game, winning 15-13.
Files led the Lady Eagles with 24 kills. Jazzmien Stephens added 11 kills. Truong finished with 32 assists, and Zane produced 31 assists.
Four Lady Braves tallied double-figure kills, with LaToya Washington leading the squad with 23. Brittany Ward finished the opener with 58 assists.
Louisiana Tech 3, Alcorn State 0
Louisiana Tech took the three-straight games to defeat Alcorn State (32-30, 30-19, 30-19). Sant?anna led the match with 15 kills. Megan Rush added eight kills, and Mora finished with 33 assists.
Donika Sutton led ASU with nine kills. Ward claimed 29 assists.
Alcorn State ended the day with a 7-8 overall record. Louisiana Tech is now 10-5 on the year, and the Lady Eagles are 7-7.
Southern Miss host Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m., in the Payne Center on the Southern Miss campus.
