Lady Eagles Lose to UNO in Three, 3-0
NEW ORLEANS, La. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team lost for the second time in as many matches, losing to the University of New Orleans, 3-0 (30-27, 30-24, 30-22). Southern Miss drops to 6-6 on the season, while UNO, winners of four-straight, improved to 4-7.
Andrea Bush led the Golden Eagles with 11 kills, while Nicki Tribble added nine kills. Amy Truong tallied nine digs for the Eagles. Jennifer Cruz paced UNO with a game-high 18 kills.
Senior setter Crystal Zane, who finished with 24 assists, moved into the top spot on the all-time assist list, recording 14 assists in game one. She now has 3,934 assists.
UNO jumped out to an early lead, 13-8, behind Melissa Caravella who notched eight kills in the first game. Southern Miss fought back, taking a 17-16 lead. Neither team managed more than a two-point advantage. The Privateers led 27-24, before finally closing out game one with a 3-2 run for a 30-27 win.
UNO took advantage of poor hitting by the Golden Eagles, taking a 12-9 lead. The Lady Eagles fought back to tie the game at 20-20 and then again at 22-22, before UNO put together a 7-1 run to 29-23 lead down the stretch. The Golden Eagles fought off one game points, but before falling 30-24 in game two.
After trading points early in game three, UNO ran off seven-straight points to take an 11-6 lead. Southern Miss would close within two points, 22-20, but UNO ended game three with a 8-2 run and cruse to a 30-22 win.
Southern Miss returns to action, Saturday, Sept. 21, hosting the Lady Eagle Classic that include teams, Alcorn State and Louisiana Tech. Match times are set for 11 a.m., with Southern Miss and Alcorn, followed by Louisiana Tech and Alcorn State at 1 p.m., and conclude with Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech at 3 p.m.
