Southern Miss Softball Begins Fall Workouts
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team began its fall practice sessions this week, with many new faces on the squad, as well as a good core of veterans returning.
?The attitude of the team is really great,? said Head Coach Gay McNutt, who begins her third year leading the Lady Eagles who held their first practice on Sunday, Sept. 15. ?Physically, we are in the best condition we have ever been in. Our first practice went well.
?We?ve got some young players who will be in some key positions for us this year, so there were some young mistakes made. They were very nervous for the first practice, wanting to prove themselves. Our returners looked really good, the best they have ever looked, so we are excited about the upcoming season.?
The Lady Eagles return 10 letterwinners from last season, including four regular starters, and eight newcomers have been added to the roster. Southern Miss is looking to rebound after a 28-35 season last year, its first losing season since the reinstatement of the program in 1999.
The Lady Eagles host a fall tournament this year. The one-day event will be held on Saturday, Oct 5 at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. Participants of the fall tournament will be announced on a later date. Southern Miss also travels to compete in the Spring Klein Tournament, in Spring Klein, Texas, on Sept. 12-13.
The Complex has a new addition added to its grounds. A locker room facility has been added behind the Lady Eagles dugout. This facility will provide a dressing room area, an athletic training area and a meeting room for the team.
