Eagles Will End Two-A-Day Workouts Friday
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss followed Wednesday's scrimmage with a pair of Thursday workouts and are scheduled to end two-a-day workouts Friday.
"We had two good workouts today," Head Coach Jeff Bower said, following the afternoon session. "We lost concentration somewhat during the second practice and, as a result, repeated a couple of periods after practice. We just had too many mistakes during those periods, and that's just not something we can tolerate."
Bower also said that sophomore wide receiver Rocky Harrison (6-1, 195, Tampa, Fla.), who was injured while making a spectacular catch in Wednesday afternoon's scrimmage, suffered a lacerated kidney, will remain in the hospital at least two more days, will be mostly bedridden several days thereafter and could miss five-to-six weeks.
Senior running back Derrick Nix, who missed the Wednesday scrimmage, saw only limited practice time today as he continues to rehab a pulled hamstring. "We'll work him a little harder Friday and would like to see him go in the scrimmage, if he's ready," Bower said. "He's the one guy who best knows how he feels and he'll go when he's ready."
The Golden Eagles are scheduled to end the week with an 11 a.m., Saturday scrimmage, following a morning rules clinic with C-USA game officials meeting with players and coaches.
Classes start Aug. 19, and the Golden Eagles open the 2002 season Aug. 31, at home, against Jackson State. Southern Miss follows that with two more home games, against Illinois, Sept. 7, and Memphis, Sept. 14, before hitting the road for the first time, Sept. 21 at Alabama.
