Golden Eagle Baseball Hosts Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi (21-11), ranked No. 28 by Collegiate Baseball, hosts Southeastern Louisiana University (14-17) in a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 9, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, starting at 6:30 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on 107 FM, The Zoo, in Hattiesburg and on www.SouthernMiss.com for fans outside the Hattiesburg area. Lance Pittman will handle the play-by-play duties with the pregame show beginning 15 minutes prior to the first pitch.
Under the direction of Corky Palmer, Southern Miss is 3-3 against SLU, 0-2 in Hattiesburg and 3-1 in Hammond, La., and overall, the Golden Eagles own a 61-42 series advantage against the Lions. This year marks the 104th meeting between the two schools.
The Golden Eagles are 21-11 after sweeping Charlotte on the road this past weekend, 9-3, 10-4 and 7-5 in 11 innings. Southeastern Louisiana was swept at Louisiana-Monroe, 5-1, 13-2 and 7-6 in 10 innings, and have dropped five in a row and now stand at 14-17 overall.
Southern Miss is currently hitting .309 as a team, has 107 extra base hits (76 doubles, four triples and 24 homers) and has stolen 33 bases. The Golden Eagles are led by junior outfielder Jeff Cook, who is currently hitting with a team-leading .360 batting average with three doubles, one triple, nine homers and 34 RBIs. Allen Winningham is hitting .354 with 13 doubles, one triple, five homers and 26 RBIs. Jarrett Hoffpauir moved into the No. 3 spot, hitting .349 with nine doubles, one triple and 19 RBIs.
Freshman Brian Hurley (2-1, 3.94 ERA) takes the mound for Southern Miss in the first start of his career. He has pitched 16.0 innings, all in relief and has posted three saves in eight appearances. He has struck out nine and walked eight and opponents are hitting .259 off of him.
Southeastern Louisiana is hitting .290, has 84 extra base hits (53 doubles, two triples, 29 homers) and has stolen 29 bases. Top hitters for the Lions are sophomore outfielder Russell Taylor, who is leading the team with a .339 batting average, with nine doubles, seven homers, 25 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Junior outfielder Blaine Wyninger is hitting .329 with one double, two homers and six RBIs. Senior third baseman Anthony Krajancic is hitting .314 with six doubles and six homers.
The Lions are sending freshman righthander Paul Labiche to the mound. He is 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA in 7.2 innings of work. He has seven strikeouts and walked three and opponents are hitting .351 against him.
After Tuesday's game with Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss hosts New Orleans, before hosting Louisville in a Conference USA weekend series in Hattiesburg, Miss., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game at 4 p.m., and Sunday's will take place at 1 p.m.
