Eagles Start Next-To-Last Week Of Spring Work
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Apparently a four-day Easter Holiday break had a detrimental effect on Southern Miss' spring football workouts, and, as a result, Tuesday's practice left Head Coach Jeff Bower less than pleased with his team's effort.
"We were sluggish today," he said. "We had to repeat a period early on, because we didn't get anything done in that period. Our effort wasn't good at that point. I think that the further into practice we went, it got a little better, but it was a slow start, at best.
"That was disappointing. You would like to have some of your older guys step up and take a lead in that regard. I didn't see or hear anyone trying to get anyone going. We've got to find some leaders."
Bower also announced that r-So., defensive lineman Skylor Magee will miss the remainder of spring practice and the spring game after suffering an MCL sprain in last week's final workout, on Thursday. "He'll be fine," Bower said. "We might have been able to push it and get him back for the game, but we felt it best to let him fully rehab that injury and be ready to go full speed in the fall."
The Golden Eagles will take Wednesday off, work Thursday and Friday and then end the week with a Saturday scrimmage. EagleFest and the spring game are set for April 13, and Southern Miss opens the 2002 season Aug. 31, at home, against intrastate rival Jackson State.
